DAY TWO

Sleepy Hollow & the Headless Horseman and Great Jack O' Lantern Blaze
After breakfast, you will enjoy a spooktacularly fun day with your local guide. Begin with a rolling tour that will take you to many of the sights linked to Ichabod Crane and Sleepy Hollow. You will visit sites such as the Van Tassel homestead, where Schoolmaster Ichabod Crane began his famous flight from the headless horseman at the home of the Van Tassel family, and the Union Church of Pocantico Hills. You will also visit Patriots Park and the Andre Captors' Monument, which is the marshy area where Ichabod first encountered the headless horseman. Next, visit Philipsburg Manor, a restoration of a 17th-century Dutch manor, where you will see the manor house and mill beside whose millpond Ichabod Crane strolled with the local girls. Then enjoy a visit to Sunnyside, Washington Irving's fascinating home, which is filled with a colorful blend of architectural styles and showcases many fascinating objects related to Irving's famous story and other tales. Lastly, tour Lyndhurst Castle, which is beautifully decorated for the fall season with many special items taken out of storage and specially exhibited. During the tour, you will discover how our current fascination with the macabre developed out of customs that originated in the 19th centry. This evening, enjoy an early dinner before taking part in one of the nation's biggest and most popular fall events, the Great Jack O' Lantern Blaze, which features thousands of hand-carved, illuminated pumpkins set against the mysterious backdrop of Van Cortland Manor's 18th-century buildings and riverside landscape.
